The Independent High Electoral Commission has announced the preliminary results of Iraq’s 2025 parliamentary elections, revealing that democratic civil forces did not gain any representation in the new parliament.
This is the first time since 2003 that the civil voice has been so widely excluded from Parliament, a dangerous indicator of the nature of the political, economic, and social environment in which the elections took place.
This exclusion does not target a specific party, but strikes at the heart of the democratic process itself, which has been transformed by the ethno-sectarian power-sharing system ("Muhasasa" or quota system) and corruption into a formal democracy devoid of substance, undermining the presence of all civil democratic forces that defend the building of a state of institutions.
We were aware of the circumstances leading up to this election and the structural imbalances surrounding the electoral process. Nevertheless, we contested the elections with high spirits and a sense of responsibility, believing in the necessity of defending the option of a democratic civil state and the people's right to an honest national alternative.
However, the outcome of the electoral process was a clear result of the dominance of political money and weapons, the “quota” system, the exploitation of influence, power, and state resources and its civil, military, and security institutions, and the fueling of sectarian, tribal, and regional tensions. This is what turned the electoral competition into an unequal race in which the same dominant forces and narrow interests were reproduced.
Other observations have been made on various technical and political issues, including the failure to implement any of the provisions of the Political Parties Law, the lack of transparency in election spending, the registration of a huge number of observers and the open buying of votes. In addition, there was the unequal treatment of civil forces, with many of their candidates being disqualified for no reason other than expressing their opinions, while none of the other parties were held accountable despite violating the constitution and the law. This extends to the method of calculating the level of turnout at the election by the Electoral Commission, the mobilization and rallying of voters in front of polling stations, and other methods of enticement and intimidation.
These practices were not hidden from anyone, but their scale this time clearly revealed the magnitude of the crisis our country is going through.
The outcome of these elections portends a difficult period of continued political, economic, and social deterioration, consolidating the monopoly of power and wealth in the hands of an influential minority, the spread of corruption in society and state institutions, and the continued proliferation of weapons outside the control of the state.
Despite all this, our Iraqi Communist Party extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to all the citizens who voted for the Party's candidates, and to all the volunteers in its election campaigns who expressed their belief in the project of democratic change. They represent the foundation of hope upon which we will build our continued struggle for social justice and genuine reform.
We reaffirm our determination to continue along this path, side by side with patriotic, democratic and progressive forces, to bring about the desired change and build a state of citizenship, equality, institutions, and human dignity.
We will also conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the elections and their results in order to reach appropriate conclusions for implementation in the near future.

The Iraqi Communist Party condemns the Israeli aggression launched at dawn today under the pretext of the nuclear file, targeting Iranian territory — while the Zionist entity's own nuclear arsenal remains outside the scope of international oversight and regulation.
We consider this reckless act an outright violation of the sovereignty of an independent state and a member of the United Nations, as well as a blatant breach of international law and norms. It is a unilateral action taken outside the framework of international legitimacy and constitutes a serious threat to both regional and global security and stability.
It is difficult to imagine such a large-scale attack occurring without the complicity and tacit or overt support of the Trump administration. Nor can it be separated from the aggressive and expansionist policies of Netanyahu's racist and fascist government, which continues its brutal war against the Palestinian people — especially in Gaza — as well as repeated assaults on Syria and Lebanon, and its ongoing attempts to drag the region into further conflict and warfare.
We also strongly condemn the Israel's violation of Iraqi airspace, which constitutes a blatant infringement on Iraq's sovereignty. We believe it is imperative for the Iraqi government to fulfil its national duty by protecting the country and its people from any potential fallout, defending national interests, and taking swift diplomatic and political action to secure these aims. Above all, it is essential to strengthen internal national cohesion, uphold the elements of national sovereignty and independence, and ensure unity in decision-making.
The international community and the United Nations must act swiftly to stop and condemn this Zionist aggression and prevent the region from spiralling into an all-out war — a war whose consequences will primarily affect the peoples of the region. There is an urgent need to achieve just and lasting peace in the Middle East through the application of international law and legitimacy, without double standards or selectivity. This includes halting the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people, fulfilling their just rights, and respecting the will and rights of all peoples in the region — including the peaceful use of modern technology.
In these critical times for the region, while we express our solidarity with the Iranian people, we call for the rejection of the logic of aggression, domination, and coercion. What is needed is to establish security and stability as the foundation for development, respect for human rights, and a life of dignity and freedom.

On the morning of Monday, April 21, people around the world bid farewell to the 'Pope of the poor', Francis, who passed away after twelve years on the papal throne. During his papacy, he implemented numerous bold church reforms. He adopted unprecedented, open stances against injustice and in favour of peace, interfaith dialogue, and the pursuit of social justice. He openly criticized governments that fail to support the most impoverished segments of society.
The late Pope became known for his humility and rejection of extravagance, and he was widely recognized for his famous statement: "How I long for a Church that is poor and for the poor."
Pope Francis had a distinctive relationship with the Middle East, demonstrated through clear and courageous positions on the region's conflicts. While his signing of the 2019 Document on Human Fraternity with Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb, is always remembered, he is especially noted for his outspoken condemnation of the Zionist aggression on Gaza and his denouncement of its brutal attacks on the people of the Strip and Palestinians in general. In his final sermon, he addressed the war in Gaza and called for a ceasefire.
We in Iraq also remember his historic visit to our country in March 2021, which was marked by pivotal moments for the people of Iraq, both Christians and Muslims.
On this sad occasion, we extend our heartfelt condolences to our Christian compatriots and to Christians around the world. We also express our sympathy to all who appreciated the efforts of the late Pope over the past twelve years. He dedicated himself to the cause of millions of the deprived and marginalised, and to the service of peace, security, and social justice in the world.

In a dangerous escalation of the United States' unconditional support for the Zionist occupation state and war criminal Netanyahu in his war of genocide against Gaza and the Palestinian people, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a plan for the direct occupation of the Gaza Strip, imposing "permanent ownership" over it, and forcibly displacing two million Palestinians from the area.
This new crime against humanity, targeting the Palestinian people through forced displacement and ethnic cleansing in Gaza, will only deepen the tragedies caused by Israel’s war of genocide and its war crimes. It also exposes the Trump administration’s determination to proceed with implementing the so-called "New Middle East" project, as well as its blatant support for Netanyahu’s plan to "redraw the region’s map." This includes resuming normalization agreements between Israel and Arab states, primarily Saudi Arabia, while expanding Zionist colonial settlement in the West Bank and threatening to annex parts of it to Israel.
This criminal plan will only further inflame the already volatile situation in the Middle East. There can be no peace or security in the region without ending the Zionist occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with international legitimacy, by establishing their independent national state on their homeland, with Jerusalem as its capital.
The Iraqi Communist Party strongly condemns the forced displacement and ethnic cleansing plans announced by the U.S. administration. It also salutes the positions of regional countries and many nations worldwide that have rejected these plans. The Party calls on Palestinian national forces to strengthen their unity and end internal divisions, as this is an urgent and decisive requirement to thwart the conspiracy of displacement and ensure the victory of the Palestinian people’s just cause.
