At dawn today, Sunday 28 June 2026, the Integrity Commission, supported by security forces, launched arrests targeting several Members of Parliament and government officials for investigation over corruption cases in which they are allegedly involved.
The corruption that has become deeply entrenched in our country over the past two decades is a product of the sectarian power-sharing system and one of its fundamental pillars. Indeed, it is the other face of that system, serving as a means of plundering our Iraq's wealth and resources.
The continuation of this campaign, which has been widely welcomed by the public, must be translated into genuine action that recovers the stolen funds, prevents those who have looted the people's money from escaping accountability, and brings them — both senior and junior figures alike — to justice so that they are tried. Appropriate legal measures must also be taken against those who supported them or sought to shield them from accountability.
It is equally essential that the campaign continues to encompass other corruption networks without discrimination or selectivity. It should be accompanied by a package of measures aimed at dismantling the system of dividing state institutions along sectarian and ethnic lines, abolishing the “Economic Offices” in ministries operated by political parties and blocs, strengthening compliance with government contracting procedures and regulations, and ensuring transparency in the preparation and implementation of state budgets, particularly with regard to major contracts.
In this regard, the Iraqi Communist Party stresses that the campaign must not stop at certain limits. Rather, it should be expanded to include all those involved in corruption. It is also important that the findings emerging from the available investigations be made public, and that accountability and full transparency be ensured in accordance with the law and under an impartial judiciary, without discrimination, so that the people may know who has plundered their nation's wealth.
